Main St. Barber Shop owner Abram Sanchez

Abram Sanchez has been a professional barber for nine years. First at the Barber Shop in the Gunter Hotel and now at his own place, Main St. Barber Shop. “I always wanted to be downtown,” says Abram. “The vibe’s just cool.”

Abram’s shop is located at 307 N. Main

He points to the energy, culture, and environment as assets that attract his main clientele: downtown workers and residents. He has built relationships with them over time, and the global pandemic has affected those bonds. Abram says there is hope, as downtown steadily comes back to life. With recommended health practices in place, downtown businesses are open and ready for locals to patronize responsibly.

Abram has added his own personal touch to the shop since taking ownership

“It’s cool to support the local scene,” he says. “Especially downtown.” Abram has captured the spirit of San Antonio in his shop, which has a decades long history. Barber Willie Cedillo had been cutting hair in downtown San Antonio for 75 years when he retired in 2017, selling the shop to Abram. Now, the walls of the new shop are adorned with vintage photographs and memorabilia that capture the history and culture of the city.

Abram says his favorite part of welcoming visitors to his shop is sharing that history and culture, as well as some local secrets and spots. It’s in this tiny barbershop on Main Street that part of SA’s history is kept alive, and its future is built, one haircut at a time.
